Key Stage One Phonics and Reading Schemes

Read Write Inc

At Falmouth Primary Academy we follow the 'Read Write Inc' programme to teach phonics and reading in the Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage One.

Children learn the English alphabetic code: first they learn one way to read the 40+ sounds and blend these sounds into words, then learn to read the same sounds with alternative graphemes.

They experience success from the very beginning. Lively phonic books are closely matched to their increasing knowledge of phonics and ‘tricky’ words and, as children re-read the stories, their fluency increases.

Along with a thought-provoking introduction, prompts for thinking out loud and discussion, children are helped to read with a storyteller’s voice.

Please watch the video below to see an introduction to how children at Falmouth Primary Academy are taught to read.

Reading At Home

Alongside their daily Read Write Inc lessons children will take home a Read Write Inc Book Bag book.
These books are fully decodable books that are closely matched with the sounds the children have already learnt.  Through daily reading at home, classroom learning will be reinforced and therefore children's progress will be accelerated.  We ask that parents listen to their children read each book 3 times to support children to develop their fluency in reading.

Please see the link below to the 'Oxford Owl E-book Library' that has additional books you can read with your child.
Phonics Screening Check

At the end of Year One it is a statutory requirement that all children participate it a Phonics Screening Check.  Please watch the video below to find out more about this.
